Universal Clipboard Not Working? 9 Fixes (and What to Do When It Can't Work)

Published

Universal Clipboard is one of Apple’s best features when it works: copy on your iPhone, paste on your Mac, no extra steps. When it stops working, it gives you no error message. The paste just puts in whatever was already on the clipboard.

Work through the fixes below in order. The first four cover most cases. If none of them help, or if one of your devices isn’t an Apple device, skip to when Universal Clipboard can’t work.

Quick checklist

Universal Clipboard needs all of these on every device involved:

RequirementWhere to check
Signed in to the same Apple AccountiPhone: Settings > [your name]. Mac: System Settings > [your name]
Wi-Fi turned onSettings > Wi-Fi
Bluetooth turned onSettings > Bluetooth
Handoff turned onSee fix 2 below
Devices near each otherSame room is safest

If any of these is off on one device, that’s almost certainly the problem.

1. Check you’re using the same Apple Account

This is the most common cause, especially if you have a work Mac or a second Apple Account for purchases. On iPhone, open Settings and tap your name at the top. On Mac, open System Settings and click your name at the top of the sidebar. The email address has to match exactly on both devices.

2. Turn Handoff off and back on

Universal Clipboard runs on Handoff, Apple’s feature for continuing tasks between devices. It’s on by default, but turning it off and on again resets it, and that’s often enough.

  • iPhone or iPad: Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity (called AirPlay & Handoff on some versions) > turn Handoff off, wait a few seconds, then turn it on again.
  • Mac (macOS 13 Ventura or later): System Settings > General > AirDrop & Continuity (or AirDrop & Handoff) > turn Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices off, then on again.
  • Mac (macOS 12 or earlier): System Preferences > General > Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices.

3. Turn Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off properly, then back on

On iPhone, the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth buttons in Control Center only disconnect you for a while; they don’t turn the radios off. Use the Settings app instead: turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, wait ten seconds, and turn them back on. Do the same on your Mac from the menu bar or System Settings.

While you’re there, connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi network if you can. Apple only asks for Wi-Fi to be on, but the same network is the most reliable setup.

4. Unlock both devices, keep them close, and paste quickly

Universal Clipboard works over short range, so keep the devices in the same room while you test. Make sure both are unlocked and awake: a locked iPhone in your pocket often won’t hand over what you copied.

Timing matters too. Copied content only stays on Universal Clipboard briefly, and it’s replaced as soon as you copy something else on either device. Copy, then paste within a few seconds.

5. Restart both devices

It’s a cliché because it works. Restart the iPhone (or iPad) and the Mac. Restarting only one of them sometimes isn’t enough.

6. Update your software

Universal Clipboard bugs get fixed in point releases. On iPhone, go to Settings > General > Software Update. On Mac, go to System Settings > General > Software Update. Update every device involved, not just the one that seems broken.

7. Check for VPNs, firewalls and hotspots

A VPN, a strict firewall, or a network that blocks devices from seeing each other (common on office, hotel and campus Wi-Fi) can stop Continuity features. To test, turn off the VPN, or try on your home network.

8. Sign out of your Apple Account and back in

This re-establishes the connection between your devices, but it takes a while and may ask you to re-download some data. Save it for when the steps above haven’t worked. Sign out on the device that seems to be the problem, restart it, then sign back in.

9. Reset network settings on your iPhone (last resort)

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This clears saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, plus cellular and VPN settings, so you’ll need to set those up again. Only do this if everything else has failed.

When Universal Clipboard can’t work

Some setups aren’t a bug. Universal Clipboard simply wasn’t built for them:

  • One of your devices isn’t made by Apple. Universal Clipboard has no Windows, Android or Linux version. There’s no setting that fixes this.
  • Your devices aren’t near each other. It works over short range, not between your phone at home and your Mac at the office.
  • You want something you copied earlier. It holds only your latest copy, with no history and no search.
  • Your work Mac uses a different Apple Account, or your company has turned Handoff off.

For these cases you need a clipboard sync app that works through the cloud and runs on every platform. Syncra syncs your clipboard across iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows, Mac, Linux and the web, over any network, with searchable history.

To be fair about the trade-off: when Universal Clipboard works, it’s more seamless on iPhone than any third-party app can be. iOS doesn’t let other apps read the clipboard in the background, so on iPhone you send items to Syncra from the share sheet, or open the app after copying. On Mac, Windows and Linux, Syncra picks up your copies automatically. The free plan covers text, links, images and files on up to 3 devices; see Premium for more history and devices.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Universal Clipboard not working between my iPhone and Mac? +

Usually one of four things: the devices aren't signed in to the same Apple Account, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth is off on one of them, Handoff is turned off, or the devices aren't close enough. If all four check out, turning Handoff off and on again and restarting both devices fixes most remaining cases.

Do my iPhone and Mac need to be on the same Wi-Fi network? +

Apple's requirement is that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are turned on and the devices are near each other. Being on the same network is the most reliable setup, so if Universal Clipboard is flaky, connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi and try again.

How long does copied content stay on Universal Clipboard? +

Only briefly. Apple says copied content stays available for a short time, or until you copy something else on either device. If you wait too long before pasting, copy it again.

Does Universal Clipboard work with Windows or Android? +

No. It only works between Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account. To copy and paste between an iPhone and a Windows PC, or between an Android phone and a Mac, you need a cross-platform app such as Syncra.

Does Universal Clipboard keep a history of what I copied? +

No. It holds only your most recent copy. If you want to scroll back to something you copied earlier, or search it, you need a clipboard manager with history.

Where is the Handoff setting on iPhone? +

Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity (called AirPlay & Handoff on some versions), then turn on Handoff. On a Mac it's System Settings > General > AirDrop & Continuity (or AirDrop & Handoff), then turn on Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices.
